This Just as school was about to end and things started to open up with respect to COVID a sad event happened in Minneapolis, USA that has sparked a lot of protest and anger. Whether you support or not the protests, it is clear that people are angry and frustrated with what they perceive as unfair treatment of people who are of different races. This is called racism and does exist in different ways not only in the USA. There are other injustices, prejudice against people with special needs, gender inequality, etc. but the level of protest regarding racial prejudice is definitely dominating the news beyond COVID-19. This video is from Canada - it is not just an American issue.
The Great Debate During this summer of discovery to have examined several important issues as well as completed assignments for your classes next year in Math, English, Spanish and for some of you the IB courses. You have been on a path of discovery regarding Virology and epidemics (COVID-19), inequality, economics and finally a specific example among many of racial inequality. There are many more issues we could examine. So ------ The question is (drum roll) what do you personally feel is the most important topic in the world for us to solve?
Participants in the great debate should prepare for a Zoom debate that includes:
Write and prepare to state what you believe is the most important issue in the world today and why - In less than a minute.
Prepare to ask questions from other debaters about their choices, join those who have similar beliefs on this topic as you and be prepared to defend your position based on science, facts, truths with evidence you can gather from investigating on the internet, in newspapers, interviewing people etc.
The objective in the debate will be to come to a consensus (look that up if you do not know what it means) in the group as to what is the biggest challenge we face in the world.
Racism is not just an American issue! Watch this video about the legacy of slavery in Brazil. Do you see parallels (similarities) to the USA? Differences?
